This is the full rundown of the rig I bring to worship and CCM sets (and the occasional secular gig)—covering the Bass Guitar itself, the Modifications that shape its voice, my Setup specs, and the Pedalboard that carries the signal to front-of-house. Bass Guitar covers my main '75 Jazz Bass and the Fender Custom Shop PJ I'm fundraising for. Modifications trades noise and inconsistency for quiet, hum-cancelling pickups, higher-fidelity wiring, a mass-loaded bridge for sustain, and a flatwound/roundwound string swap I use to shift between warmer and brighter voicings depending on the song. Setup dials in the neck relief, action, pickup heights, and intonation that keep that tone consistent and comfortable to play across a full set. Pedalboard rounds it out with compression and EQ shaping—plus a touch of overdrive—that takes the bass from clean and controlled in ambient moments to full and driven in anthemic choruses. Together, it's a rig built less around one fixed tone and more around a range: quiet enough to disappear into an in-ear mix during a hushed bridge, and present enough to cut through a full band at the height of a chorus.
Together, these mods turn a stock-spec passive '75 Jazz Bass into a genuinely quiet, gig-ready instrument without giving up its vintage voice—a trade-off that matters a lot for worship/CCM. Shielding and hum-cancelling pickups keep the noise floor low enough to disappear in an in-ear mix or during the hushed, ambient moments many worship sets build toward, where even faint 60-cycle hum would stick out. The balanced pickup winding and higher-fidelity harness make it quick to dial in tone between songs—brighter and more present for driving choruses, rounder and more sustained for verses and bridges—without fighting an output mismatch between pickup positions. The mass-loaded bridge adds sustain and holds its tuning under stage volume and temperature swings, so long, ambient notes ring out cleanly instead of decaying fast. The Cobalt flatwounds add just enough top-end clarity and dynamic range to stay articulate in a full-band mix while keeping finger noise low for close-mic'd or in-ear monitored stages. The result is a bass built to sit reliably in the pocket across a whole set, from ambient to anthemic, without extra noise or fuss getting in the way.
Noise Reduction: Faraday Cage
Copper shield tape lining the pickguard back, pickup cavity, and controls cavity forms a Faraday cage around the electronics. This is the standard fix for single-coil hum: it shields the wiring/pickups from electromagnetic interference, meaningfully lowering the noise floor without altering the pickups' tone.

Balanced, Hum-cancelling Pickups
Swapping to Lindy Fralin Split Jazz pickups (a split-coil design) cancels hum at the source, unlike traditional vintage single-coils. The asymmetric winding (neck 5% underwound and bridge 5% overwound) is a deliberate voicing choice: it's the classic fix for the natural output/tone mismatch between Jazz Bass pickup positions, bringing the neck and bridge pickups into better balance so blending them (or switching between them) sounds more cohesive rather than one position dominating. The A and D string polepieces on both pickups are also raised slightly above the E and G polepieces, following the fretboard's 7.25" radius so each polepiece sits an even distance under its string rather than in a flat line across a curved fingerboard.

Higher-fidelity, More Reliable Wiring
The Lindy Fralin prewired Jazz Bass harness swaps-in boutique components (Emerson 250K potentiometers, a Jupiter vintage-spec tone capacitor, a Pure Tone output jack) in place of stock parts. The practical result is smoother pot taper, a more musical tone-control roll-off, and a sturdier/less failure-prone output jack—reliability and tactile-feel upgrades layered on top of the tone shaping.

Sustain & Tuning Stability: Mass-loaded Bridge
Swapping the stock, lightweight stamped-steel bridge for a Hipshot MassKicker bridge is a direct drop-in—no extra routing or hole modification—but adds significantly more mass at the bridge. More mass means more of each string's vibrational energy gets reflected back into the string instead of being absorbed into a flexing bridge plate, so notes sustain longer and ring out more evenly, which matters for the sustained pads and held notes common in worship/CCM. Fully independent, adjustable saddles also make intonation and string spacing easier to dial in and hold steady across a set.
Warmer, Flatwound Voicing
Ernie Ball Super Slinky Cobalt Flatwound strings (45-100 gauge) trade the zing and finger noise of roundwounds for the smoother, warmer attack flatwounds are known for—a natural fit for this bass vintage passive voicing. The Cobalt alloy core keeps that flatwound warmth from going dull, adding brighter top end and a wider dynamic range than a standard flatwound, so the low end stays present without losing articulation.
Switching Back to Roundwounds
For songs that call for a brighter, more percussive attack than the flatwounds offer, I'll swap in a set of D'Addario Nickel Wound EXL165 strings (45, 65, 85, and 105 gauge). I go with the heavier-gauge low E since roundwounds are naturally brighter than the flatwounds, and the added low-end weight and tension helps balance out that extra brightness.
